  1. Just be warned. Ventrilo works very well and is very easy to use; however, it have some kind of “big brother” reporting mechanism every time to start the client or server. An 86-byte UDP packet goes out to server1.ventrilo.com on port 5000. The company so far has refused to explain the purpose for this network traffic.

  2. Just a guess, but from reading their documentation, I think this is a mechanism for them to be able to offer a redirect to folks running servers on dynamic IP addresses.

  3. I do not believe that’s related to port forwarding for ventrilo servers. It’s probably for market-share tracking, and harmless. They don’t need to explain what it is — 86 bytes… probably pretty useless except for basic usage stats.

  4. I am not sure but I think it is a way for them to check and see if you are connected to an authorized ventrilo server host. They are big on shutting down people using hacked hosting software from what I understand. This MAY be to report what ventrilo you connect to. I do not think it would prevent you from connecting but more so a reporting fuction for them to know where hacked servers are located.

Again I have not looked at the packets but knowing how their software works a little I suspect this should be looked at……
