The other weekend, Molly and I went down to Olympia to take in Procession of the Species. In the words of one of the organizers, Terry Zander…

You would like a “brief quote” about something 10 years in the making?

Something which opens art, imagination, sharing and the streets of Olympia to 30,000 plus people. A celebration which takes all year to plan for; two months(Jan/Feb) of concerted effort on the part of dozens of volunteers to set up for; two months(Mar/Apr) of staggering amounts of time, energy and love from hundreds of people to staff and maintain a community art studio for all the world to use for free; and the particpation of folks from around the world, not the least of whom are the individuals from the Olympia-Rafah Sister City Project who honor the life Rachel Corrie and the legacy of peace she leaves with us. That’s about as ‘brief’ as I can be in summing up the Procession.

The Procession of the Species Celebration is not an event; it’s a way of life.

I took my digital camera along (a Canon EOS Digital Rebel), and snapped a bunch of photos. Some of them came out quite well — you can check out the highlights in my online photo gallery. Big thanks to Bill Bradlee for use of his amazing zoon lens.
