Genetically Engineered Food Not So Good for Rats

I’m shocked, shocked to learn that it appears that genetically engineered corn seems to be causing health problems in rats, according to secret research conducted by Monsanto and published by the UK’s “The Independent” newspaper today.

>Rats fed on a diet rich in genetically modified corn developed abnormalities to internal organs and changes to their blood, raising fears that human health could be affected by eating GM food.

>The Independent on Sunday can today reveal details of secret research carried out by Monsanto, the GM food giant, which shows that rats fed the modified corn had smaller kidneys and variations in the composition of their blood.

>According to the confidential 1,139-page report, these health problems were absent from another batch of rodents fed non-GM food as part of the research project.

But of course Monsanto is holding back on the details:

>The full details of the rat research are included in the main report, which Monsanto refuses to release on the grounds that “it contains confidential business information which could be of commercial use to our competitors”.

We simply can’t trust immoral corporations like Monsanto to be truthful about the possible consequences of their tinkering with our food supply.

  1. I understand concerns over genetically engineered food. I do not see how a “secret” research papers leak tells us much about the role of genetically engineered foods for humans. I mean, people eat some really nasty, and bad shit everyday, and they pay for it with hypertension, heart attacks, diabetes, ect. Is monsanto immoral for trying to make “progress” or is the current model for a business to make money immoral? How can all the contraversy be verified or tested so actual truth can be known?

  2. If these findings are true then this is shocking information. It’s bad enough as the above user mentioned that , we eat food every day that is detrimental to our helath , and to be subjected to genetically engineered food that can put our lives in more danger is devastating. Lab rats are tested constantly as models for humans when it comes to science and if a rat is being harmed by eating this food then imagine what kind of affect it can have on humans. It isn’t surprising that this research was done in Europe due to the fact that they are some of the biggest opponents of genetically engineered food. However, unlike the above user, we should not rule out any research or findings when it comes to issues of the environment. We do have to test these findings and be sure how accurate they are but nevertheless it’s something to look into. We take a risk anytime we use technology to produce our food supply. However, I do believe that Monsanto’s postion not to release the report about the findings because of confidential business information not being leaked to competitors is a weak move. Moreover, this is another reason to do more studies and research on gentically engineered food because we don’t want to try and stop the problem when humans wind up like these poor rats.
